Adopting Elizabeth or better yet, Adopting Mommy!

I am adding to this post, not removing the original content. And I'd like to say that it has been a beautiful journey to be Elizabeth's Mom and to be part of her life. I hope Eli, that one day you can go over this blog that I've created for you and that you will cherish our lives together. I'd like to title this blog" Adopting Mommy" instead. You've taken me, accepted me and made me a better person.

Original Post from 2008 when I created this blog: Some of the pics were taken at the foster home where she has lived since she was born. We have received these photos on a monthly basis together with her medical reports.

We are in Guatemala with baby Elizabeth / Ya estamos con Elizabeth

We were supposed to meet the attorney, foster mother and Elizabeth at 530pm at the hotel. At 7 pm they were still not here. I decided to call the attorney, which I had not done so as to not rush them. She said that she had already been here and the front desk told them that there was nobody registered under last name McKinney ... They came back and we finally met at around 730pm. This time it was more difficult for the baby to say goodbye to her foster mother. After they left she kept crying and nothing would stop her, getting louder and louder.
Finally, after putting her in the stroller, we took her down the hallway, some juice and then her bottle. She fell asleep. She was exhausted. Slept pretty well the entire night although she woke up at around 2am asking for more milk and when she saw herself alone in the crib and with strange faces around her, I could see her face of terror and despair but we managed to calm her down and she went back to sleep.
We just came back from breakfast on the first floor and she ate something they call here in Guatemala "pache" which is a small tamal with some chicken in it. She ate the whole thing plus some ripe plantain and then she was ready to walk around.
We said hi to a couple that are picking up their 11-month old son. He is a cutie but is not walking, yet. (Eli was walking at nine months.) Elizabeth was very interested in bonding with him. She grabbed his hand, wanting to get him out of the high chair to play with him. Her personality is outstanding!
It's been a little more difficult for Eli to accept Greg and I think that the main reason is that she didn't have a "man" at the foster home and it could also be his beard and glasses. But I have to say that at breakfast time she let him feed her and walk her around. I think this is great for being with us not even 24 hours. She has been laughing and smiling most of the morning and ... she is very busy!

She is now taking a nap. Once she wakes up, we will be heading to the "supermercardo" for food, juice, and water.

Congratulations! I'm so glad to hear that she is with you.

Just remember, that the more they grieve for the foster parent, the more bonded they were and thus, capable of being bonded to you and Greg, and that is a very good thing. For some children, this can take a little time which can be disappointing for the new parents who are so thrilled.

Sophia didn't grieve for long but with Keenan, it took a few months before he really started to be affectionate with us. One year later, he is attached to us like a little barnacle.

Best wishes for a safe trip and a easy and uneventful finalization.
